LNG vessel docks in Quintero after earthquake
The Methane Allison Victoria LNG tanker docked on March 1 at Chile's GNL Quintero LNG regasification plant in central region V, a GNL Quintero spokesperson told BNamericas.
Erroneous reports emerged on Monday that operations had been suspended due to damage at the terminal's loading docks after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit central and southern Chile.
"During the earthquake, the plant's emergency systems worked perfectly," the spokesperson said. "After all the necessary tests were done, it was determined that the plant was in conditions to return to operation in a secure manner."
"The GNL Quintero terminal is operating and has supplied gas to the system demanded by the market since the earthquake," the spokesperson added.
No ships were docked at the port when the earthquake hit early Saturday morning, according to GNL Quintero.
Besides meeting residential and industrial natural gas demand in central Chile, the complex also supplies gas to thermo power generators in the region.
Britain's BG Group (LSE: BG) has a 40% stake in GNL Quintero, while Chilean generator Endesa Chile, state oil company Enap and local gas distributorMetrogas each have 20%.
The GNL Quintero plant is the first land-based LNG regasification facility to be constructed in South America and boasts a send-out capacity of 10Mm3/d that could eventually be expanded to 20Mm3/d.
Chile's second regasification plant, the GNL Mejillones complex in northern Chile, was not affected by the earthquake, according to local press reports.
