Earthquake leaves Global Crossing data center offline - source

The 8.8-magnitude quake that rocked Chile last Saturday (Feb 27) has knocked off service at international connectivity provider Global Crossing's (Nasdaq: GLBC) local data center, according to a tip received by BNamericas from a Global Crossing client.
The client, who asked not to be cited, said that service has been down since the earthquake struck on Saturday morning.
"The information that we've received is that, even with all the security regulations and conditions that it should have, even for catastrophes like this, the data center failed," the source said.
BNamericas directly contacted Global Crossing's Chile data center manager, Marcela Núñez, as well as the company's marketing and communications manager for the Southern Cluster, Gabriel Grifasi, in order to confirm the report. However, both officials declined to comment.
